The breach was discovered by researchers at the vpnMentor cybersecurity company, who alerted Beeline.ru authorities. The company acknowledged the breach and launched an investigation, but did not publicly disclose the extent of the leak until January 2020. The hacked database was subsequently made available for download on several hacker forums.
