Upstox, a popular online brokerage firm in India, suffered a massive data leak in 2021, exposing sensitive information of over 110,000 customers. The leaked data included various personal and financial details, such as bank account numbers, date of birth, email addresses, family member names, gender, government-issued IDs, income levels, marital statuses, nationalities, occupations, passwords, phone numbers, and addresses.
The incident was reportedly discovered by a security researcher in May 2021, who found an exposed Elasticsearch database containing the sensitive information. The researcher claimed that the database was left unsecured and accessible to anyone with a web browser, allowing unauthorized access to the sensitive data.
The leaked records reportedly belonged to customers who opened trading accounts with Upstox between 2012 and 2021, with the majority of the records dating back to 2018 and later. The incident has raised concerns about data security and the potential misuse of the leaked information. Upstox has since acknowledged the incident and promised to take measures to improve its security measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
