On February 10, 2020, Gainful Database, a US-based database of online education providers, suffered a data leak exposing 304,973 records of students and institutions. The breached data included sensitive information such as names, emails, phone numbers, addresses, and education credentials.

The leaked data also contained information about online education providers, including their names, websites, and program offerings. The breach was reported to the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Attorney Generals office in several states.

The leaked data was discovered by a security researcher who notified Gainful Database of the breach. The company initially denied the breach but later acknowledged it and launched an investigation. Gainful Database claimed that the breach was the result of a third-party data provider and that it had taken immediate action to secure the affected data.
