The FBI and DHS databases were hacked in 2015, resulting in the leak of 31,547 records. The attack is believed to have been carried out by a group of hackers known as The Pawn, who gained access to the databases through a vulnerability in a third-party software.
The hackers gained access to the databases by exploiting a vulnerability in a program called D-Link\DWR-510 router, which was used to manage internet connectivity to the databases. Once inside, the hackers were able to extract and download email addresses, first and last names, and other personal information of individuals who had registered to access the databases.
The leaked information included not only government officials and employees but also contractors and others who had access to the databases. The attack was particularly notable because it highlighted the vulnerability of government databases to cyber attacks.
